Why Does Switzerland Continue to Produce So Many High Earners?

Switzerland’s reputation for wealth creation is often associated with innovation, entrepreneurship, political stability, and a highly competitive economy. Less frequently discussed is what happens after wealth has been created.

According to Bilanz’s annual “The 300 Richest” special edition, 7,666 taxpayers were reported as having declared an annual income exceeding CHF 1 M in 2022. Yet these high earners are far from evenly distributed. Of Switzerland’s approximately 2,100 municipalities, only 239 are home to at least five income millionaires.

The City of Zurich leads in absolute numbers with 482 income millionaires, while Zug follows closely with 431 despite having only a fraction of Zurich’s taxpayers. Even more striking is Wollerau (Canton Schwyz), where nearly one in every twenty taxpayers reports an annual income above CHF 1 M, the highest concentration in the country. Nearby Freienbach, home to Alpen Partners’ headquarters, ranks fourth nationwide with 251 income millionaires.

The geography tells an interesting story. Switzerland’s lower-tax cantons, particularly Zug and Schwyz, have attracted entrepreneurs, executives, and internationally active families. The southern shore of Lake Zurich—the so-called Pfnüselküste—now has more income millionaires than the traditionally affluent Gold Coast on the opposite shore.

Tax policy alone, however, is unlikely to explain Switzerland’s long-standing success. Equally important is the country’s tradition of disciplined wealth management. For generations, successful families have recognized that creating wealth is only the first chapter. Preserving it, managing risk, planning across generations, and maintaining financial flexibility often become the greater challenge.

This philosophy remains at the heart of traditional Swiss wealth management today. Rather than focusing solely on investment performance, it considers the broader financial picture…globally diversified portfolios, multi-currency strategies, succession planning, international banking relationships, and long-term stewardship of family wealth.

For internationally minded investors, Switzerland continues to offer more than an attractive place to invest. It provides access to a wealth management tradition that has evolved over centuries. One built not only on growing wealth, but on helping families preserve and organize it for generations to come.
